The house where Steve Jobs built Apple is now a historic landmark

It doesn't seem like Patricia Jobs, sister of famed Apple co-founder Steve, is exactly onboard with her family home being designated a "historic resource" by the Los Altos Historical Commission. Not that it matters, anyway. According to the San Jose Mercury News, the decision to preserve the one-story home at 2066 Crist Drive where Jobs got a start building the first Apple computers was made independent of her consent. The distinction, which Patricia can still appeal, also means any renovations/repairs to the home would first have to be reviewed by the commission -- so you can understand why the honor's both a blessing and a curse. Of course, we all now associate Cupertino as the homebase of Apple's current operations. But before Apple could build itself into the consumer tech juggernaut of modern day, and carve out a new spaceship campus, there was just Jobs, a dream and modest home that's now effectively a museum.

Facebook latest random company said to be eyeing Blackberry Bid!

Never mind that Facebook hasn't exactly taken the world by storm with smartphones carrying its brand. And never mind that what's left of BlackBerry's user base is largely comprised of Enterprise-based users who value the platform's added layer of security -- not exactly the kind of people who would embrace the idea of a BlackBerry built around easy wall updates and photo sharing. According to The Wall Street Journal, Facebook is the latest company to kick the tires at the beleaguered smartphone maker, and execs from the two companies met in California last week to discuss a possible deal.
On the surface, there's some logic to the idea of a Facebook-BlackBerry tie-up. Facebook certainly has pockets deep enough to afford an asking price of over $4 billion. And Facebook's future is tied inextricably to the mobile universe, where it has over 800 million users and brings in 41 percent of its ad revenue. Having its own mobile platform would guarantee Facebook's ability to promote its wares in the event that Google, Apple, or Microsoft decided they didn't want to prominently feature Facebook on their devices. And, given the way the battle royale between Apple and Google over iOS played out, those concerns may not be entirely far-fetched.
However, with very few mobile players other than Apple and Samsung actually making anything selling handsets, and with Google continuing to lose money on Motorola, taking over a device manufacturer -- particularly one that seems to be in a permanent tailspin -- seems like a losing battle. At least in Nokia, Microsoft will get a company that has seen its sales tick upward in its most recent quarter. For $4 billion, Facebook would get the Z10 and a company that's losing a billion dollars a quarter -- and potentially risk losing fans among Android, iOS and Windows Phone manufacturers. Sounds like something Zuckerberg wouldn't like a whole lot.

The man behind the IBM PC, William C. Lowe, dies aged 72

The man responsible for shepherding the original IBM PC to life in a single year, William C. Lowe, has died at 72. After he convinced then-CEO Frank Cary that such a machine couldn't be built quickly "within the culture of IBM," a team of 12 engineers called the "dirty dozen" was assembled under his leadership. They designed the iconic computer using off-the-shelf pieces like the Intel 8088 CPU and Microsoft's DOS 1.0 operating system. The resulting $1,565 IBM Personal Computer kicked off the PC revolution and was even named Time's "man" of the year in 1982. Ironically, IBM's commitment to open-sourced parts and software helped spawn the competition that eventually torpedoed its PC division, which was sold to Lenovo in 2005. Lowe himself parted company with IBM in 1988, later saying that his team wasn't trying to change the world and just wanted "IBM developers to work on IBM products" -- not Apple's.

Exclusive interview and BBM Chat between the two companies

In sub-Saharan Africa, Samsung and BlackBerry are working together to promote BBM – BlackBerry’s iconic mobile instant messaging platform. We’re pleased to announce BBM is now available to all Samsung GALAXY smartphone owners in sub-Sahara Africa from the Samsung App store.
Samsung customers in sub-Sahara Africa will enjoy three-day exclusive period before BBM becomes available to other Android and iPhone customers around the world.
For Samsung customers in Africa, BBM will be part of Samsung Messaging Hub, complementing the range of propriety and third party messaging services that customers currently enjoy.
Now that Samsung GALAXY smartphone users in Africa have full access to the BBM social network, they are able to enjoy BBM chats, multi-person chats, BBM Groups and share photos and voice notes, as part of the BBM community.
Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President for BBM at BlackBerry met virtually via BBM with George Ferreira, VP and COO of Samsung Electronics Africa, to discuss the launch of BBM on Samsung GALAXY smartphones in Africa. We’ve captured the conversation below for your reading pleasure:

AB: I’m thrilled to welcome Samsung customers in Africa to the BBM family!
GF: Thank you! I think we are giving the African market what they want – and what they want is choice.
AB: smileyChoice to benefit from one of the best and most robust mobile messaging experiences today
GF: Actually I think the only thing BBM has been missing in Africa up until now is our Samsung customer base.
AB: And your customers will now benefit from the best and most robust mobile messaging experience on their Samsung GALAXY smartphone.
GF: Our customers are just excited to be able to use the unique features built-in to BBM to complement their current messaging platforms.

BBM: 20 million new users in One week

One week ago we launched BBM for iPhone and Android. What a week it’s been! With the addition of more than 20 million new users on BBM, we are now at over 80 million monthly active users* of BBM across BlackBerry, Android and iPhone, and #teamBlackBerry is thrilled. During its first week, BBM was the top free overall app in 35 countries on Google Play™ and in 107 countries in the App StoreSM and continues to maintain a strong position in key markets such as Canada, the US, the UK, Indonesia and much of the Middle East, to name a few.

Clearly, the momentum of BBM for BlackBerry, Android and iPhone continues to grow and while we are excited by the download numbers we saw this week, downloads do not speak to the way people interact with each other using BBM and we will now focus on active use of BBM – the connections being made and the conversations in which our BBM community engages.
During this first week, the BBM team also worked to quickly publish updates for both iPhone and Android users that introduced additional features and performance enhancements. On Saturday, we removed the line-up from Google Play and the App Store and customers can now download, sign in and start using BBM!

For those of you new to BBM, welcome! Be sure to check out our how-to videos and getting started guide. These will help you get the most out of BBM and discover all that it has to offer. The feedback on BBM’s immediacy in message delivery, the ease of use BBM offers and the reliability offered by the delivery [D] and read [R] notifications has been absolutely amazing!
To our long-time BBM users on BlackBerry, thank you. Thank you for inviting your colleagues, friends and family to join you on BBM over the last week, and for sharing your passion for BBM with them. I also want to thank the BBM team and the employees at BlackBerry. The tremendous success we’ve seen this week wouldn’t be possible without your hard work, dedication and commitment.

One of the hidden gems of our launch that is now coming to light is our sharing tool at http://www.bbm.com/share, which helps our users quickly add new contacts to BBM. There is also a new way to share your PIN so that Android and iPhone customers can easily click it and add you to BBM:http://www.pin.bbm.com/. We are seeing a lot of excitement as people share PINs and get connected on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more.
BBM is set apart in the mobile messaging space by offering immediacy and a feeling of connecting and collaboration that mirrors the feeling of a face-to-face conversation, all within a simple and easy user experience.

We also put control back into people’s hands. Let’s not underestimate the importance of deciding who will have access to you and your information and how you will build a community of those people.
We still have a few more tricks up our sleeves and I will look to share more with you as we bring new features to BBM in the coming months.

*Monthly active users are defined as BBM users who send or receive any data through the BBM service within a given 30-day period.

Nokia sells 8.8 million Lumias in Q3

Nokia has just released its interim report for Q3 2013 and, although the company's overall financial situation is still a bit muddy, it's clear the company is starting to see real success in the US. Thanks to a burgeoning range of Lumia devices and a big marketing push to go with them, the Finnish manufacturer saw net unit sales increase by 180 percent to 1.4 million units, up from just 0.3 million in the same quarter last year. This growth helped to push global Lumia sales up by almost a fifth, reaching 8.8 million units in the space of three months.

LG Officially Announces the Curved LG G Flex Smartphone

LG Electronics yesterday officially took the wraps off the LG G Flex, a smartphone curved designed to follow the contour of your face. The new device is curved top to bottom unlike the recently announced Samsung Galaxy Round which is curved from left to right.

The latest device in LG's premium G Series, the G Flex incorporates proprietary innovations from other LG companies in the form of the display and battery that have never been seen before. The LG G Flex also boasts new user experience (UX) features that take advantage of the curved form factor.

"The LG G Flex is the best representation yet of how a smartphone should be curved," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "The LG G Flex with its distinctive design, innovative hardware and consumer-centric UX represents the most significant development in the smartphone space since smartphone became part of our regular vocabulary."

Form + Function: Design that Understands Human Curves
The vertically curved design of the LG G Flex reduces the distance between one's mouth to the microphone when the device is held against the ear, as traditional telephone handsets used to. The LG G Flex employs a curvature arc that is optimized for the average face, to deliver improved voice and sound quality. The curved form increases the sound level by 3dB compared to typical flat smartphones. The curved design also offers a more reassuring grip and fits more comfortably in one's back pocket. What's more, in landscape mode, the display offers an IMAX-like experience, with the result being the most comfortable viewing angle for watching videos or playing games.

LG G Flex also features the Rear Key first introduced in the LG G2. Devoid of any buttons on the sides, there is less chance of accidentally powering off the phone and the convenience of using one's index finger to adjust the volume when conversing is maintained.

Innovation Delivered Through Collaboration
The development of LG G Flex was only possible through the successful collaboration with sister companies LG Display and LG Chem. The 6-inch display found in the G Flex is the world's largest Plastic OLED (POLED) display developed and mass produced specifically for smartphones. The ultra-thin, ultra-light flexible POLED display and curved OLED panel are built on plastic substrates instead of glass, giving LG G Flex its unique shape and durability. The POLED display is brighter and more precise thanks to the application of Real RGB, which contains all three sub-pixels - red, green and blue - in one pixel.

LG Chem developed the world's first curved battery technology specifically for application in LG G Flex. The curved battery in the G Flex is designed with LG Chem's patented Stack & Folding technology, which reduces the physical stress on the battery pack when in the curved form and provides better stability and performance. Despite its thin form, the LG G Flex battery has a capacity of 3,500mAh, enough power for more than a full day of use.

User-Centered Technologies
Among the several new technologies, the LG G Flex is the first smartphone to apply a "Self Healing" coating on the back cover. The elastic coating has the ability to recover from the daily wear-and-tear scratches and nicks that un-cased smartphones are likely to receive, keeping the G Flex looking newer longer.

Users of LG G Flex will have a wider selection in the ability to enjoy in various format of music - MP3, CD quality or 24 bit/192kHz Hi-Fi playback. UX features, such as KnockON, Guest Mode and Plug & Pop, which were positively received when first introduced in the LG G2, can also found in the LG G Flex.

The LG G Flex also includes an array of new UX features:
- QTheater gives users quick access to photos, videos and YouTube right from the lock screen. By touching the screen and dragging outward along the curved surface with both fingers, the apps appear with the effect of theater curtains being drawn.
- Dual Window divides the wide 6-inch screen into two separate windows for more effective multitasking.
- Swing Lockscreen alters the image on the lockscreen depending on how the G Flex is held.
- Face Detection Indicator displays the LED on the Rear Key in green to confirm status of face detection and focus.
- Camera Timer flashes the Rear Key LED to indicate that the countdown has begun.
- Urgent Call Alert flashes the LED on the Rear Key in red when several consecutive calls from the same person go unanswered.

Key Specifications (Korean Version):
- Chipset: 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm? Snapdragon™ 800 (MSM 8974)
GPU: Adreno 330, 450MHz
- Display: 6-inch HD (1280 x 720), Curved P-OLED (Real RGB)

HTC One Max vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Introduction

The Samsung Galaxy Note may have started the phablet craze, but history won't count for much when the Note 3 faces the HTC One Max. The Max takes the lauded HTC One design and build and trumps the Note 3 in terms of screen size. This fight though is about more than sheer size.

When we compared the Galaxy S4 vs. HTC One we noted that the looks and build quality of the One are miles ahead of the Galaxy S4, while Samsung balanced that out with better specs.
On the phablet playground, both companies worked on areas, which needed improvement - it's the HTC that has the bigger screen this time around, but the Galaxy Note 3 caught up in terms of looks. In case you're not closely familiar with the specs of the two phablets, here's a quick recap of where each device bests the other.

HTC One Max over Galaxy Note 3

  • Bigger screen - 5.9" vs. 5.7"
  • LCD screen is brighter, with great contrast
  • Front-facing stereo BoomSound speakers
  • Aluminum exterior
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Better audio quality
  • FM radio

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 over One Max

  • S Pen stylus with many clever applications
  • Faster chipset - Snapdragon 800 vs. 600 (Exynos 5 Octa version available too)
  • 3GB RAM over 2GB
  • Lighter - 168g vs. 217g
  • More compact - 151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3mm vs. 164.5 x 82.5 x 10.3mm
  • 13MP still camera over 4MP camera with, no OIS on either of them
  • 2160p @ 30fps and 1080 @ 60fps video capture over 1080 @ 30fps
  • USB 3.0 over USB 2.0
  • Removable battery
We'll break down these advantages and cover them in more detail later on, but one thing is clear from the get go. The HTC One Max is basically an enlarged One, while the Galaxy Note 3 is a device from a separate line and has a number of significant advantages over its Galaxy S4 sibling.

HTC One Max faces off against the Samsung Galaxy Note 3
HTC did improve a bit on the basic One design with a fingerprint sensor and a microSD card slot, but the camera OIS got lost along the way. Is that enough to stop Samsung's freight train of features?
We'll know for sure when all the rounds of this heavyweight boxing match are over and the hits are counted. It all starts with design and handling - jump over the next page to see if the big-boned beauty with pedigree can score the first hit against the leather-bound late bloomer.

WhatsApp grows from 200 million to 350 million monthly users

A quick visit from WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum. Mr. Koum announced that the highly popular instant messenger has now reached 350 million monthly active users. In mid-April this year the CEO announced that WhatsApp is bigger than Twitter with 200 million monthly active users and that number was 300 million in August.
Koum’s announcement was Nokia related in a way – a massive 7 million new users come in each month through one of the WhatsApp-supporting Nokias. That’s just under 250,000 new users each day signing up through a Windows Phone, Symbian or Asha device.

$14 million worth of LG G2s stolen!!!!!!!!

Also known as:
LG G2 D802 for UK
LG G2 D802TA for Australia
LG G2 D803 for Canada
At around 6:30pm a driver stopped at a truck stop in Gary, Indiana for a quick break and when he came back he found his truck missing. The cargo he was driving? 22,500 LG G2 phones headed to Sprint stores in Louisville, Kentucky.
Indiana and Illinois state police along with the FBI have launched an investigation.
Phone heists are nothing new – though it’s usually an iPhone that’s the target. However, in the iPhone cases it was a couple of hundred units worth around $100,000 in one case and £100,000 in the other.
An LG G2 off contract costs $630 new so this heist was worth about $14 million.
Will phone heists become the 21st century equivalent of the bank robbery? Maybe not, but the Indiana market is probably about to be flooded with cheap G2s.
