Google starts Open Automotive Alliance to promote Android-powered cars

Google started the Open Handset Alliance, which gave us Android, and now it’s unveiling the Open Automotive Alliance, which aims to bring the mobile OS on the road. The other founding partners are Audi, GM, Honda and Hyundai, along with NVIDIA.

More members are expected to join in the OAA’s mission to accelerate the development of intuitive, safe cars.
The platform promises openness and customization that has been a cornerstone of Android. The goal is to make it easier for car makers to enable new tech in their vehicles, but also bring in developers to “deliver powerful experiences for drivers and passengers in a safe and scalable way”.
Smart cars are getting a lot of attention from big tech companies and the OAA isn’t alone – Apple is pushing Siri Eyes Free, while the new Nokia sans phone division is highly interested in car software too (the company retained the mapping division).
