Line messenger reaches 400 million registered users
Line, the instant messaging app from Japan, has announced that it reached 400 million registered users, after hitting the 300 million mark in November last year. Note that “registered” is different from “active” users, a number which Line did not unveil.
The instant messenger boasts that it now has over 10 million users in 10 countries (including the US).
Anyway, Line announced that in March it saw a record number of messages – 10 billion – sent in a single day. It also handled over 12 million voice calls in a day and 1.8 billion stickers.
The sticker market is part of Line’s value-added market that is proving quite popular – JPY 34.3 billion ($338 million) in revenue in 2013. Stickers accounted for 20% that, while games brought in 60%.
Line’s CEO says the instant messenger is aiming for 500 million users this year. This definitely heats up the competition between it and Viber, which was recently acquired by Japanese firm Rakuten.
